Now a white bear is a relatively neutral thought for most people. But when the thoughts are more “taboo” in nature, like the ones in OCD, it can cause a person a great deal of distress. 

Which is exactly why people engage in all sorts of behaviors to try and stop the thoughts.

But, as we just learned, the problem is that more things you do (mentally or physically) to try and not have intrusive thoughts, or to get rid of the thoughts, the worse they are going to get.

This is the hardest part of dealing with Intrusive Thoughts.

In fact, most people don’t even realize they are making this mistake. So they just keep engaging in the same behaviors to fight their thoughts, and this is what keeps them stuck in an endless cycle of intrusive thoughts, high levels of anxiety, and compulsive behaviors that loops on repeat.
