The Path to Peace: Finding Stillness Within Yourself
By Matt Codde, Restored Minds
Are you struggling with OCD, anxiety, panic attacks, or chronic pain? You’re not alone. In our constant search for relief, we often chase one solution after another—hoping for peace, calm, and an end to our suffering. But as I shared in my recent episode of Restored Minds, the path to true peace is both simpler and more challenging than we often realize.
Why We’re Really Searching for Peace
Whether you’re battling intrusive thoughts, uncomfortable feelings, or even physical discomfort, the real desire isn’t to just get rid of symptoms—it’s to feel at ease in the moment. The truth is, everything we chase in life, from money and relationships to new experiences or possessions, is just an attempt to return to that inner stillness.
But here’s the tough truth: Peace isn’t something you’ll find outside of yourself.
The Illusion of External Solutions
Many of us get caught up in searching outside ourselves—through travel, relationships, food, entertainment, or achievement. We think maybe the next thing will finally bring the peace we’re after. But no matter where you go or what you do, you bring yourself and your internal state with you.
The temporary relief you get from external distractions is just that—temporary. The environment might distract you from your pain, but the underlying unresolved emotions always resurface once the distraction fades.
The Real Source of Suffering
The root of suffering isn’t hidden in your environment—it’s in the “emotional tank” you carry. Unprocessed fear, anger, pride, guilt, shame, apathy, or desire—all those uncomfortable states we suppress or avoid—are what block us from peace.
Triggers in our environment (like a sign, a person, or a situation) only activate what’s already within us. They don’t cause our suffering—our own suppressed emotions and limiting beliefs do. True transformation comes from recognizing and releasing these inner burdens.
The Journey Inward
So, what does the real path to peace look like? Instead of endlessly chasing distractions or new experiences, begin to gently confront the thoughts and feelings you’ve been avoiding. Processing and letting go of old fears and negative beliefs is what will ultimately reveal the peace that exists within you—behind all the internal noise and distraction.
As the saying goes, “The treasure you seek is in the cave you least want to enter.” The journey inward—while challenging—is where lasting peace is found.
Practical Steps to Find Inner Peace
-
Notice your triggers: When you feel distressed, observe what’s really bothering you. Is it the situation, or an emotion it stirs up?
-
Sit with discomfort: Instead of escaping, try to be present with uncomfortable feelings. They’ll lose power as you allow them.
-
Question your beliefs: Ask yourself if the stories you tell yourself about your fears or feelings are really true.
-
Process emotions: Use journaling, meditation, or guided exercises to safely process and release stored emotions.
-
Seek support: Sometimes, working with a guide or therapist can help you navigate this inner work.
