The Paradox of Trying to Fix Yourself

February 17, 2025

Many of us feel ensnared in the cycle of self-improvement, especially when it comes to our mental and emotional well-being. We’re conditioned to view emotions like anxiety and fear as problems to be eliminated. That mindset leads to a paradoxical trap, where the effort to rid yourself of these emotions sustains — or even worsens — them.

Healing happens beyond the conscious mind

Healing isn’t something we actively do in the traditional sense. It’s a natural process driven by what some describe as the subconscious mind, or a divine spirit within us. This principle operates beyond our conscious thoughts, managing bodily functions and healing physical injuries without our direct intervention.

The same is true of emotions. Emotions themselves are not inherently dangerous or problematic. It’s our perception and belief about them that instigates resistance, and that resistance creates a cycle of suppression and escapism.

Emotions are communication, not enemies

Emotions serve as a form of communication, much like pain. They indicate underlying beliefs, and they need to be acknowledged rather than resisted. Labeling emotions as diseases or as threats to be extinguished only perpetuates them.

Rethinking the approach

Common practices such as meditation, cold exposure, or breathwork can be beneficial for your well-being. But if you undertake them with the primary goal of eradicating emotions, they inadvertently contribute to a state of resistance. That resistance stems from a flawed belief system in which you perceive yourself as broken or unacceptable in your current state.

Challenge the belief

An important step in genuine healing is to challenge the belief that something is inherently wrong with you. Begin by asking yourself what prompts the desire to fix yourself. Reflect on whether the emotions you’re experiencing truly indicate a problem, or whether it’s your narrative and perception that need adjusting.

Emotions are a natural part of the human experience, and they can guide you toward healthier beliefs if you allow them to process naturally.

Embrace non-resistance

Understanding and embracing non-resistance can relieve pressure and allow a more profound healing process. By changing the way you perceive your emotions — and realizing that healing is a natural process — you free yourself from the unnecessary burden of thinking you’re failing.
