The Paradox of Certainty: Why Answers Keep You Anxious

June 23, 2025

Are you stuck in an endless loop of trying to be 100% certain about your fears, beliefs, or worries — especially with OCD and anxiety? You’re not alone.

The certainty trap

Most people experiencing OCD and anxiety are constantly searching for external certainty. Researching online, watching videos, talking to friends, seeking reassurance from spiritual leaders — all in an effort to get some kind of absolute answer.

Here’s the paradox: chasing certainty only digs the hole deeper. The more you try to become 100% certain, the more you fuel the loop. Instead of finding freedom, you end up more trapped than before.

Why we seek it

The real reason we pursue certainty is that we’re trying to escape an uncomfortable emotion — usually fear. Instead of addressing the discomfort directly, we project the fear onto a theme or an idea:

  • “What if I get sick?”
  • “What if I lose control?”
  • “What if I’m not good enough?”

We convince ourselves that becoming 100% certain the worst won’t happen will make the anxiety disappear.

Certainty doesn’t exist

You can never be absolutely certain about anything. Fear latches onto ideas and themes that are, by their nature, uncertain. Nobody fears impossibilities — “what if I’m attacked by a unicorn?” — because there’s no uncertainty there.

And no one is more certain about their deepest fears than anyone else. Someone with contamination fears isn’t any more certain they won’t get sick than someone with religious fears is about their salvation. The topic changes; the chase and the underlying fear stay the same.

Why it keeps you stuck

The pursuit of certainty acts as a compulsion. It distracts you from the real issue, which is how to handle uncomfortable feelings. Even if you could become certain, the anxiety would simply attach itself to a new theme — which is why people shift through different themes of fear across their lives, never truly finding peace.

Trying to become certain is trying to run from yourself. The only real path is learning to confront fear within yourself, without needing to be 100% certain about every thought or feeling.

“Certainty is a trap. It does not exist. And even if you got certainty, it wouldn’t do what you think it’s going to do.”

The way through

Stop projecting your discomfort onto something external, and stop trying to make yourself certain. Learn to approach the feeling head-on instead. Freedom comes from learning how to handle fear, not from outrunning it.

You don't have to figure this out alone.
