Recovery Is About Presence, Not Pressure: A Mindful Approach to True Healing
Are you struggling with OCD, anxiety, fear, or chronic pain? You're not alone on your journey to mental and emotional wellness. My name is Matt Codde, licensed clinical social worker and founder of Restored Minds, and today I want to share a transformative idea: true recovery requires presence, not pressure.
Why Presence Matters in the Recovery Process
One of the most common traps people fall into when seeking recovery is operating from the belief that they need to "fix" their symptoms as quickly as possible. The mindset is: "I'm having these symptoms, I don't want them, and I need to get rid of them—now." This sense of urgency creates reactiveness, impulsiveness, and a harsh lack of self-compassion. Instead of moving forward, people often find themselves stuck, cycling through the same challenges repeatedly.
When we bring pressure to recovery, we reinforce self-rejection and resistance. We try quick fixes, set extreme deadlines, and neglect the crucial inner work required for lasting change. Whether it's a crash diet for physical transformation or coping mechanisms like avoidance and distraction for mental health, pressure may offer fleeting relief but rarely delivers long-term results.
The Power of Presence
Presence means allowing yourself space to experience what is happening right now, without judgment or urgency to change it instantly. Ask yourself:
-
How do I handle emotions as they arise?
-
Am I suppressing or avoiding them, or am I allowing myself to feel and understand them?
-
What are my beliefs about thoughts, and how do they shape my actions?
-
Who do I believe I am, and how does that affect my journey?
True presence requires daily practice. It's clearing space for reflection, becoming aware of your inner patterns, and meeting yourself where you are. When you choose a mindful approach, you nourish your mind and body, just as you would nourish yourself in a sustainable physical transformation—by making small, healthy choices each day and expanding those out over time.
Imagine extending your daily habits over the next 10 or 20 years. Are your current responses leading you toward health or more struggle? When we bring presence, we create opportunities for authentic, lasting transformation.
Letting Go of Pressure
Understand that pressure only breeds more resistance. If you demand quick fixes—reaching for a pill, distraction, or any avoidance tactic—you reinforce short-term relief but sacrifice long-term growth. Instead, shift your focus to presence:
-
Be aware of your emotions and thoughts as they arise.
-
Give yourself permission to be present with discomfort instead of rushing to escape it.
-
Reflect on the patterns that brought you to this point, and approach change with patience and self-compassion.
Presence is the antidote to resistance. It's through this mindful awareness that real recovery takes root—and, ultimately, flourishes.
